These photographs were taken while walking around my local streets — bare branches of deciduous trees against the winter sky. The species of these trees, introduced to Australia in the 20th century, were planted for their aesthetic appeal but also serve a hidden function as living architecture — demarcating streets, shaping private property, and mapping urban infrastructure.
Aesthetically, the photos draw parallels with Nobuyoshi Araki’s “Three Thousand Skies” series of the Tokyo skyline which in turn owe a debt to the historical paintings of Japan. Which I guess makes sense given some of the species such as Pyrus calleryana are native to East Asia.
