These photographs were taken while walking around my local streets. They depict the bare branches of deciduous trees against the winter sky. The species of there trees, introduced to Australia in the 20th century, were planted for their aesthetic appeal but also serve a hidden function as living architecture — demarcating streets, shaping private property, and mapping urban infrastructure.
Aesthetically, the photos draw parallels with Nobuyoshi Araki’s “Three Thousand Skies” series of the Tokyo skyline which in turn owe a debt to the historical paintings of Japan. It is then of no surprise that some of the species such as Pyrus calleryana are native to East Asia.
